Ingredients
Black Beauty Smoothie
- 1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
- 1/2 cup grape juice
- 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries, frozen
- 1 cup fresh blackberries, frozen
Big Bold Banana Smoothie
- 3/4 cup soy milk
- 1/2 cup soft silken tofu
- 4 fresh bananas, frozen and sliced (we learned to slice these BEFORE freezing, haha.) Oops, they are hard to handle cold!)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon carob powder OR the secret ingredient*
* The secret ingredient is chocolate chips – about 1/4 cup. Not all kids like this – you can serve some plain first, and add chips (and blend!) for those who want them.
Instructions
Combine ingredients in a blender, blend til smooth.
More Information
Next Friday, some of the student chefs will do the creating – from concept to slurp. Rumor has it we’re making a lemon concoction and one with mango and berries and a secret ingredient.* I have a feeling we’ll have to do smoothies a lot this summer.
Getting berries and other staples such as yogurt is easy at Costco or any grocery. Really good, ripe fruit makes a huge difference. These recipes recommend washing and freezing the fruit before blending it, which keeps the flavors powerful without using a lot of ice. Don’t worry, we aren’t putting anything like kale in these recipes… yet. 😉
These recipes come from a great little book, Smoothies – 50 Recipes for High-Energy Refreshment, by Mary Corpening Barber, Sara Corpening, and Lori Lyn Narlock.
