Pizza Mummies

I have NEVER had such a large group of kids turn out to make a recipe - we had two groups of 12, plus 6 more added in.  The word "pizza" is magical. Add the mummy component, and you have a real winner. Plus these are easy and take only about 20 minutes to make. The idea was to make a little rectangular French-bread pizza, laying strips of white cheese over the sauce to look like mummy bandages. The eyes are two sliced black olives at the top. What resulted, however, were some very cute face shapes, some geometric compositions,  one barn design, and a few mummies. The kids loved the final product. To get a nice oblong shape, I used Ciabatta rolls sliced in half (one half for each mummy.)

Ingredients

  • Olive oil for brushing on bread
  • Granulated or powdered garlic
  • 1 long French bread loaf,  OR individual rectangular Ciabatta rolls, sliced in half horizontally (found at Safeway.)
  • Pizza sauce
  • Sliced Provolone cheese, i.e., for sandwiches
  • Sliced Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 small can sliced black olives
  • Other toppings as desired (such as onions, mushrooms, peppers, crumbled sausage, pepperoni)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Slice the bread or rolls in half lengthwise, making two open-faced sandwich halves. The French bread can be cut into individual servings about 5″ long.
  3. Brush olive oil on the cut surfaces, and sprinkle lightly with garlic powder or granules.
  4. Spread about a tablespoon of pizza sauce on each sandwich half. Add other desired toppings.
  5. Cut the slices of cheese into strips about 1/2″ wide.
  6. Place the strips across the pizzas in a random way, to appear like bandages across the mummy.
  7. Add two sliced olives for the eyes.
  8. Place the mummies on a baking sheet covered in foil or parchment. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes, or until cheese is bubbling. Allow to cool for a few minutes before eating.
